lucky on new single ‘houston’

words: marita luck

Melbourne/Naarm based artist Lucky has released her new single 'Houston'. Her music has been described as having the raw energy of alternative rock infused with the haziness of modern indie. A captivating storyteller Lucky. preparing to play headline shows in Sydney and Melbourne, Lucky is a singer/songwriter determined not to be stuck in the space between fear and forward motion.

TEMPER: You just released your new single 'Houston'. When you are writing new music do you think about how the songs will sound live and how the audience will react to them?

LUCKY: It’s been interesting being on some cool support tours and noticing the way certain chorus’ or one-liners get a passionate crowd going each night. I think it will always be a goal to have my own songs that create these special moments. As I continue to write, I want to keep making music that excites me and feels amazing to play live.

T: Are you feeling more nervous or more excited to be headlining your upcoming shows?

L: I definitely felt a nervous energy, especially at the start of planning and announcing the shows, it was a little scary to try and picture people turning up. But as it approaches I’m feeling way more excited. It definitely helps seeing the tickets actually move — my Melbourne show is almost sold out now actually!

T: Your single 'Lady Beetle' came out earlier this year. You have said it's about stepping out of your comfort zone and backing yourself even if it's a scary thing to do. Do you find it easy to show your vulnerability through your songwriting?

L: I love to walk the line between saying a lot whilst not saying too much. I find most of my lyrics can be a bit open ended, and can mean different things, leaving it open for people to interpret however they wish. This approach definitely makes it easier to be vulnerable, as it feels more like I'm building a puzzle, in creating a song, more than a diary entry!

T: Your music, it has been said seems to pay homage to an era that was loud, unapologetic and gritty. Can you tell us who your influences were that led you to become the artist you are today?

L: Growing up I was heavily influenced by pop/rock stars who lead a very strong and unapologetic path, including Avril Lavigne and P!nk. They will always be in the bones of my artistry and songwriting, purely because of the influence they had on me through my childhood. It's transitioned over the past few years through listening to more ‘band heavy’ alt-rock music like Now Now & Momma where a lot of my songs currently draw inspiration from.

T: As you move forward as an artist do you feel that your sound is a progression of where you are musically or more a reflection of your life events?

L: I think what I'm currently listening to, feeling and being inspired by will always reflect what I'm making sonically! For me, life is mostly reflected through the lyrics!

T: What does the next twelve months hold for you?

L:I can’t wait to continue to build the musical and visual world of Lucky. I'm excited for there to be more songs, more of a catalog for people to dive into as I release more music. And of course playing more shows, I hope there's plenty more of that, maybe even in places I haven't played before!
